Running Injuries

Running Injuries

It is a common myth that running is a naturally intuitive exercise pursuit. The reality is that we are not all as well designed to run as each other. Although our most convenient and popular form of exercise, running exposes our body to significant loads, as much as 3-4 times our bodyweight going through our bodies during the foot strike phase of running. "It has been estimated that 27-70% recreational runners sustain overuse lower limb injuries in any given year.

Running related injuries are amongst the most commonly seen by our physiotherapists. The highly repetitive nature and high impact can cause a wide range of injuries such as :-

Lower back pain

Piriformis syndrome and sciatic nerve irritation

Shin splints

Stress fractures of foot, shin, hip and even lumbar spine

Patello-femoral (knee cap) pain

Patellar and Achilles tendonitis

Iliotibial band syndrome

Hamstring overuse injury

If you are a runner suffering with any of these or similar symptoms it is important to get them assessed by one of our physios as running through them is likely to only make the situation worse. Our physiotherapists will perform a complex biomechanical analysis of your body alignment and can undertake a video analysis of you running to assess anomalies in running style that could result in imbalances and ultimately injury. We will then develop a treatment plan that will bring you back to your pre-injury fitness levels.
