The Mummy MOT
The Mummy MOT is a specialist, comprehensive postnatal check-up that screens for any ongoing issues following either a vaginal or C-section birth. Carried out by a trained physiotherapist, it assesses how your posture, pelvic floor and abdominal muscles are recovering after childbirth.
Many women may experience weakness in both the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy. This can cause instability or poor core strength and may lead to the development of pelvic, back pain or bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. Although common, these conditions should not be something you should accept as a result of having had a baby, no matter how long ago you gave birth.
Mums need to be able to bend, squat and lift every day and the Mummy MOT can assess your function and ability to carry out these tasks and if needed, provide postnatal treatment, clinical care and exercises following birth to help ensure that you can continue to do this and improve your fitness without experiencing problems.
The assessment takes 1 hour and includes:
Full postural screen • Pelvic floor muscle assessment • Abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation • Assessment of C-section or perineal scars • Screening for bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction • Education and advice on safe activities such as lifting your baby or pushing a buggy • A written report of the findings of your assessment
Following an assessment, we can arrange for further treatment if required and can offer hands on manual treatment, scar therapy, rehabilitation exercises and Pilates.
A Mummy MOT is recommended from 6 weeks post-natal following the 6-8 week GP post-natal check. We also see any female who gave birth possibly years ago who still may be experiencing issues related to childbirth. It’s never too late to be checked.
